Abstract

In this tutorial we will show how graph based models can be integrated with deep learning algorithms to solve a wide variety of problems in Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR). The integration itself can be imparted in different ways. For example, a minimum cut or a random walk on a graph can follow a deep model like UNet or GoogleNet. Alternatively, loss function appearing in a deep network can be improved through regularizers, drawing inspiration from the structure of the energy function in a graph cut. It is also a popular practice to apply deep learning on graph structured data in the form of a Graph Convolution Network (GCN), which falls under the broad umbrella of Graph Neural Network (GNN). Example problems have been carefully selected from two different domains, namely, multimedia (e.g. action recognition and action anticipation in unimodal and multimodal egocentric video) and biomedical image analysis (e.g. segmentation of brain tumor in MRI and brain cells in microscopic data) to demonstrate the application of these different deep graph models. With comprehensive experiments performance benefits from using deep graph models over state-of-the-art competitors, as well as their advantages over deep models or graph models used in isolation, will be evident. While the lectures would provide rich theoretical foundations and rationale, the demos would impart valuable knowhow.
